From Your Mind to the Page

The other day, I was thinking about a story I'm currently revising. I was trying to figure out what to with the scene I was working on, but it was frustrating because I didn't have my computer with me. I think I used to be much better at writing scenes in my head, even if they never came out the way I intended them to. I feel as if I need to be able to look at the words I've already written to continue writing.

Are you able to "write in your head" and type or write it out later, or do you also compose in front of your computer or pad of paper? Please feel free to comment below. I expect to be in a meeting for most of the day, but I look forward to reading your answers.

I write in my head all the time. Usually its a replaying of the same scene which morphs as he is repeated. By the time I write it I'm usually thought the issue I may had with the scene in the first place.

I am actually much better at writing in my head than in front of the computer. Every so often when I hit a brick wall, I just get up and walk around for a while, rolling the scene in my head. 9x out of 10, I'll find the answer I'm looking for.

I am actually much better if I can write in my head first and then sit down immediately to write it down. I do particularly good thinking in the shower.

I get the words in my head, and I MUST write them down or type them. Then, like you, I need to look at them to see how I want to write them from that point. :)

I write directly to the screen with my computer. I generally storyboard ahead of time so that I know where I want to go for that day and can keep a general idea of the scope of the overall story.

Sounds like I need to practice writing in my head more!

I sit down in front of the computer and type. I usually have an idea of what *should* happen next, although sometimes I don't (or what I though would happen doesn't).

I walk in the afternoons and I'm always writing in my head as I go. My characters absorb the traits of people around me.
