Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off 2017

The Self-Published Fantasy Blog Off is an annual contest for self-published fantasy novels. (There's also an additional requirement that they be standalones or the first in a series.) Although this is its third year, I haven't heard of it until recently. Nearly three hundred books will be reviewed by ten bloggers. Each blogger picks a favorite from the thirty or so books he or she was assigned, then of the bloggers decide on an overall favorite. The prize for winning? Glory--and a selfie stick. In addition to the main contest, there's also a side cover contest.

I've entered Seasons' Beginnings into this contest, and it's been assigned to The Qwillery. There are a lot of books competing, including some I've already read. Odds are low for any individual book making it to the top ten, but this contest is still good for exposure. If you want to follow along, there's a Facebook group set up for the contest. If you'd like to help spread the word about it, Laura M. Hughes has prepared several banners for the contest, including the one I'm using.

Thanks to the organizers and bloggers for doing this, and best of luck to all!

Season Avatars #AtoZChallenge: Nils

It's hard to believe this is the third full week of the A-Z Blogging Challenge. To celebrate, Chaos Season is on sale this week for $0.99.

"Nils" is an insult Salth and her son Sal-thaath call people who can't use magic. Although ordinary people can't use magic, they do have some magic associated with their souls. (This is what allows Gwen to see people's auras and tell what their birth seasons are.) Salth realizes that since there are so many more Nils than magic-users, she could gain a fair amount of magical power if she could harvest the small amount of magic each of them has.

This term only crops up in Seasons' Beginnings.

Season Avatars #AtoZChallenge: Kay and Kron

Kay ava Seltich is the shortest, youngest, and least confident of the Season Avatars. However, as the Winter Avatar, she has the most powerful magic--that of weather. She can create lightning balls, summon rain and hail, or make them disappear. As a Winter Avatar, she can tap into the magic of Chaos Season, drain it, and share it with her sister Avatars so they can heal the damage left behind by the storm. Kay was born to a working-class family in Wistica and worked as a seamstress before the rest of her quartet found her. She is harassed by both Dorian and Salth, but she'll get to tell her story in Summon the Seasons once I finish the revisions.

Kron Evenhanded earned his surname by being both ambidextrous and fair-minded. He was born with a knack for making magical artifacts. In particular, he's known for making magical finders and creating portals to other locations. He takes a "pantser" approach to creating artifacts, putting random things together until they feel right to him. After attending the ancient Magic Institute, Kron drifted around until he arrived in Vistichia, where he met both the beautiful, kind Bella--and Sal-thaath, Salth's magically created son. His relationships with both of them play a crucial role in the beginnings of the Season Avatars and Chaos Season. Read more about him in the permafree prequel Seasons' Beginnings.

Blogging A-Z Challenge--Theme Reveal

Happy first day of spring--and Happy Birthday to my character Gwendolyn lo Havil, the Spring Avatar! It's supposed to be warm but rainy by me today. I hope you have better weather for your vernal equinox.

With spring here, April isn't far behind, and that means the A-Z Blogging Challenge will start next Saturday. Yesterday was the official theme reveal. I realized that in the evening, so I decided to share my theme today. (I normally don't blog on Sundays.)

My theme this year will be my fantasy Season Avatars series. There are currently four books available: Seasons' Beginnings, Scattered Seasons, Chaos Season, and Fifth Season. Each day, I'll discuss at least one character, place, or idea important to the series. There will be sales and possibly some giveaways during the month, though I haven't worked out all the details. The posts are all written and scheduled, so I should have time to visit plenty of other blogs during the month. Hope you'll stop by Monday through Saturday to learn more about the Season Avatars series.

Please read the rules listed in the pinned post at the top of the Facebook page. Hope you find some good books and are lucky enough to win a signed book or an Amazon gift card!

Science Fiction/Fantasy Book Giveaway!

Networking is a beautiful thing. Thanks to a self-publishing mailing list that I belong to, I was able to join a major science fiction/fantasy book giveaway being held on Instafreebie. It's running through November 26th, and over 40 authors are participating. You can see the entire list of available books here, including my work, Scattered Seasons. In return for these freebies, you will be asked to join that author's mailing list for each book you download. There's bound to be something for every SF/fantasy fan, so check it out.

Lady Gwendolyn lo Havil is an Ava Spring, born to heal others and lead the Season Avatars of her generation. Season Avatars with divine magic must work in groups of four to save the country of Challen from Chaos Season, times when all of the seasons appear at once. When the current Ava Spring dies in a riding accident, Gwen must find the other three Season Avatars she will link with.  But two of them are missing, and with Gwen's own magic crippled by a cursed pottery shard, she will have to use all of her skills to find the Avatars scattered across the country of Challen. During her journey, she meets a stranger who claims to know the shard's origin. Is he truly an ally of the Season Avatars, or is he trying to stop them from uniting?

Don't forget Seasons' Beginnings, the first book of the series, is permafree at major eBook retailers. You can find your favorite store through this link.

Kron Evenhanded is an artificer, able to enchant any man-made object, but he finds people more difficult to work with. When he visits the city of Vistichia, he encounters Sal-thaath, an extremely magical but dangerous child created by Salth, another magician Kron knew at the Magic Institute. Kron attempts to civilize Sal-thaath, but when his efforts lead to tragedy, Kron is forced to ally himself with a quartet of new deities and their human Avatars. Together they must defend Vistichia as Salth attempts to drain its life and magic. But Salth has Ascended halfway to godhood over Time. Will Kron’s artifacts be enough to protect the Avatars, especially the woman he loves, or will Time separate them?

Seasons' Beginnings Now Permafree Everywhere!

I think the title pretty much says it all. I had to contact KDP Customer Service to get them to price match Apple, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble, but now Seasons' Beginnings is free on Amazon as well. Come read about an artificer whose love for a woman chosen by a Goddess draws him into a war between gods. (And then go check out the next two books in the Season Avatars series: Scattered Seasons and Chaos Season.)

Seasons' Beginnings Free this Week!

The blog title pretty much says it all. The first book in the fantasy Season Avatars series is free on Amazon through Friday, October 23rd. Here's the blurb:

Kron Evenhanded is an artificer, able to enchant any man-made object, but he finds people more difficult to work with. After many years studying at the Magic Institute, he leaves to return to his childhood home. When he visits the city of Vistichia, he encounters Sal-thaath, an extremely magical but dangerous child created by Salth, another magician Kron knew at the Magic Institute. Kron attempts to civilize Sal-thaath, but his efforts lead to tragedy. Salth, who has gained additional magic from the stars, vows revenge against Kron and his beloved Bella. Kron is forced to ally himself with a quartet of new deities and their human Avatars, including Bella. Kron must help the new Avatars defend Vistichia as Salth attempts to drain its life and magic. But Salth has Ascended halfway to godhood over Time. Will Kron’s artifacts be enough to protect the city and the Avatars, especially the woman he loves, or will Time separate them?

Since my family life has become insanely busy, I'm planning to decrease my blogging frequency to twice a week, Monday and Friday, at least temporarily. After all, there will be five books in this series, and I still have to edit the third book and finish the first draft of the fourth. I may still post guest posts and for the Insecure Writers' Support Group, however.

Anyway, feel free to download a copy of Seasons' Beginnings on me, and see you Friday!

Season Avatars News--Free Book and Cover Wars Contest

A couple pieces of news regarding my fantasy Season Avatars series:

1. I've decided to make Seasons' Beginnings free for August. My goals for doing so are hopefully to gain some more reviews for this book (since it's hard to promote a book without good reviews) and to pique interest in Scattered Seasons. Seasons' Beginnings is currently free on iTunes, Kobo, and now Barnes and Noble. Time to ask Amazon to match them.

2. Scattered Seasons is part of the August Cover Wars for Masquerade Crew. You can vote every day (see the link in the sidebar), and you have up to 25 votes. Obviously I'd appreciate it if you could support Maria Zannini's wonderful cover for Scattered Seasons; however, since you can vote for multiple covers, there are some other great ones there too. (I qualify for additional promotion by the Crew if I feature other covers in this post beside my own, which is why the competition is included here.)

Seasons' Beginnings Now in Extended Distribution

The title pretty much says it all. You can find Seasons' Beginnings on iBooks, Nook, Page Foundry, and Scribd. Kobo is still in process, but it shouldn't take long via Draft2Digital. For some reason, the cover doesn't show up at B&N, but it does everywhere else. I haven't had a chance to publish this yet on Google, but once I do, I'll add more links to my website.

I'm done with the current round of edits for Scattered Seasons (Book Two of the Season Avatars) and am starting to send it out to my beta readers. Once I straighten out a few business-related things, I'll contact the Book Cover Diva to prepare the cover. I'm tentatively planning to publish it in April--perhaps for my birthday. I definitely want it out by WisCon in May.

Even though I haven't finished the outline yet for Chaos Season (Book Three of the Season Avatars) yet, I have started the rough draft. I plan this to be a five-part series, with the remaining books to be titled Fifth Season and Summon the Seasons. So if you don't mind, I'll keep this post short so I can write. Enjoy your day!

Going to Google

I was a bit reluctant to publish my books on Google Play because I'd heard it was complicated and that they tend to discount unexpectedly, which can create havoc on Amazon if they price match when you don't want them to. However, I found a great checklist that guides you through the process. It's not that hard, but to me, it's strange how much Google uses ISBNs to identify books. You start the process by entering an ISBN, and you have to use the ISBN as part of the file name(s).

Lyon's Legacy is live on Google Play, and Twinned Universes went live this morning. Unfortunately, I do have to price my books higher on Google to get around the random discounting. Lyon's Legacy is $0.99 on Google (I don't think they discount this price), and Twinned Universes is $3.49 but discounted to $2.65. EDIT: After raising the Google price to $3.99, they discounted TU to $3.03. That seems reasonably close to Amazon's price of $2.99, and I will say Google was very fast about updating the price.

As for my other books, Seasons' Beginnings will be coming out of Select next week, and I plan to distribute it via Draft 2 Digital and Google Play. The sequel, Scattered Seasons, will also get wide distribution. I might even put my poetry book on Google Play because, hey, why not?

Do you buy books on your phone? If you do, do you use an e-reader app or buy from Google Play?

Goodreads Giveaway for Seasons' Beginnings

Since I have a few extra paper copies of Seasons' Beginnings, I thought I'd hold a Goodreads giveaway for them. There are three copies available for the US and Canada, and I'll sign them directly to the winners. I've heard shorter giveaways are better, so this giveaway is only one week long. You can use the widget off to the side or this link to enter. Please spread the word, and if you enter, good luck!

Science of the Week, 12/5/14

Earlier this fall, I hosted author Vanessa Finaughty as part of her blog tour for Wizard of Ends. She graciously returned the favor by interviewing me about Seasons' Beginnings. You can read the interview here.

Here are some of the most interesting science news articles I read this week:

Mere expectation of treatment can improve brain activity in Parkinson's patients

Nail stem cells prove more versatile than press-ons

Protein that rouses the brain from sleep may be target for Alzheimer's prevention

Researchers use 3-D printing to guide human face transplants

The human eye can see "invisible" infrared light

"Mirage Earth" exoplanets may have burned away chances for life

Unlike people, monkeys aren't fooled by expensive brands

Have you started holiday activities yet? This weekend, I have my company's holiday party, a cookie exchange, and a holiday train ride. Hopefully I'll manage to squeeze in some holiday writing--or even regular writing--in there as well.

Take care, and I'll see you Monday.

Down to the Wire...

Although I didn't sign up for NaNoWriMo this year, I did set myself a personal challenge to finish revising the second draft of Scattered Seasons in November. Last night, around 11:15, I did it. My word count for the month was nowhere near 50,000 words, and I really struggled with this ending, since I changed the plot of this book extensively to match with Seasons' Beginnings. The ending was completely new, and I had trouble blocking out how it should go. But the draft is done and comes in under 75,000 words. Time to take a break from it until next year and switch back to the Catalyst Chronicles universe for a while. I know where Julia's story has to go; I just need to figure out the path to get her there.

Anyway, congratulations to everyone who participated in NaNoWriMo. Even if you didn't finish your book or the word count, just showing up and writing can be a victory. Keep the momentum going!

Holiday Sales for Seasons' Beginnings and Twinned Universes

I have two separate sales going on this holiday season. Today through Wednesday, I'm advertising Seasons' Beginnings through SciFiFantasyFREAK. I promised a special price of $0.99 for the eBook, so it's currently on sale now through Wednesday. It's a pity I didn't coordinate the ad with Read Tuesday, as I plan to put both Seasons' Beginnings and Twinned Universes on sale for $0.99 from 12/7 through 12/13 for Read Tuesday. If you haven't read either of those books, early December is the best time to get them.

Read Tuesday

I'm not into Black Friday shopping, but I do love shopping for books. Here's an event that's up any reader's alley: Read Tuesday. If you're not familiar with it, it's a day designated for giving the gift of reading. Lots of books, both paper and digital, will be on sale Tuesday, December 9. I plan to participate, and one of the ways I'm doing so is by making all of my Matchbook deals free. From now through the end of the year, you can buy a paper copy of Lyon's Legacy, Twinned Universes, Life at Seventeen Syllables a Day, or Seasons' Beginnings on Amazon and get the eBook free. There will be some other deals going on around that time as well.

Author friends, if you'd like to promote your books during Read Tuesday, please check out this link.

Execerpt from Seasons' Beginnings

The final (or final final) version of Seasons' Beginnings has been uploaded to Amazon and will go live next Tuesday, 10/21. The print version should be available very soon. I don't think Amazon allows previews or samples of pre-order book until the actual publication date, so here's a sneak peek at the opening:

Kron Evenhanded was packing up his many unsold artifacts when a woman in a scoop-necked dress pushed her way through the crowd and halted in front of him. She had a grim expression on her face and one hand behind her back. “I hear you’re a magic-user, stranger.” Her tone made it clear she didn’t think much of his kind.

“I’m an artificer,” he replied. He waved his hand over his collection: scraps of wood embedded with pebbles, a couple of bronze mirrors with words carved into the handles, soapstone figures, cloth bags, and more. He had the most eclectic merchandise in the city—and the most misunderstood. She didn’t seem like a customer, but he had to treat her like one. “Each of these items is enchanted. Do you want me to demonstrate what they can do, Dame, or should I make an item just for you—”
“Can any of your items do this?”

She thrust a white, bloodless chicken a thumbspan from his nose. Kron blinked as he stared at the carcass. Its head was on backward, melded smoothly to the neck as if the bird had been born like that.
Kron had only arrived in Vistichia a few days ago, but he hadn’t encountered any other artificers—or other magicians, for that matter. Many people blamed magicians for the recent plague of disasters that had inspired Kron to return to his own family in Delns. What if they blamed him for this? He could end up as dead as the chicken.

He smiled at the woman while wishing his tunic and leggings were less torn and stained. “That’s not my type of magic, Dame. I work with made objects, not natural creatures.”

“Well, could this be a side effect of your magic?” she asked.

Kron shook his head. “None of my artifacts can do that to a living thing. Where did you find the hen?”

“In my henhouse. She was one of my best layers.” The woman shook the carcass at him. “We have laws in this city, magician. There’s a fine for destroying someone else’s property.”

“But Dame, I didn’t—”

“Phebe, that’s enough.” Another woman, younger than the first, stepped forward, her arms draped with baskets full of bread, vegetables, and fish. “He’s not that kind of magician. Can’t you tell from looking at his wares that he doesn’t practice magic on animals? Someone else was cruel to our poor Mama Hen.” Her gentle voice became grieved at the final words.

“She was an egg-layer, Bella, not a pet.” But Phebe looked down and stepped away from Kron’s temporary shop as if ashamed by her earlier accusation.

He turned to the other woman. She wore a simple white tunic with a matching headcloth covering her dark hair. Her large eyes, flecked with green and gold like gems, would have made deer envious. As Kron met her gaze, she smiled and looked away. He couldn’t blame her; he was hardly as lovely to look at as she was.

“Thank you, Dame.” He honored her with a slight bow.

“It’s Dama.” Bella smiled at him again, making his stomach feel like a thousand butterflies were trapped inside. If he remembered the title correctly, “Dama” meant she was unmarried. The men in this city were fools to overlook someone this kind and pretty.

Phebe cleared her throat. “I still want to know what happened to my chicken and who did it.”

Without looking away from Bella, Kron heard himself saying, “I’m done with the marketplace for the day, Dame and Dama. Perhaps I might be able to find out who killed your hen.” He picked up a finder. “With this, I can track magic.”

Thanks for reading! If you'd like to learn more about this book, check it out here.
