How do you feel about viewpoint characters who disappear mid-book?

I do not mind as long as they die spectacularly.

Actually, I read two books like this recently where a viewpoint character disappeared partway through the book. In one book, we found out later he had died, but we didn't get to experience it directly, and the book went in a different direction afterward. Considering the romance between this character and the heroine was the major focus of the back cover blurb, I felt a little cheated by this. In the second book, a viewpoint character is captured by Chinese police and never heard of again. This is the first book in a trilogy, so maybe he'll return. But even though that subplot had served its purpose for the overall plot, it still didn't feel resolved. Or maybe it's just that I wonder if we really needed to spend so much time on that subplot to begin with. We'll see what happens in the next two books.
