I think Russell left out a third option: to learn from a book. That's the main reason I read non-fiction.
Since getting my Kindle, I've downloaded some free-but-not-easy-reading classics, such as Swann's Way and Ulysses. If I ever manage to finish them, that will be something to boast about!
I read for both reasons. :D More often it's the first, but sometimes I do read just to be able to say "I read that!"
ReplyDeleteI'm with Golden Eagle. I read for the first reason, but if I love something, you can be sure I will try to convince everyone else to read it as well.
ReplyDeleteI also read for both reasons, but I always hold on to the hope that I will love what I read to boast..
ReplyDeleteLove this! I've read a book before just to say that I've read it.

Ha!
ReplyDeleteI'll add one more reason: to learn. I spend a lot of time analyzing why a book works or doesn't work, to hopefully make my own writing better.
