Tell us about your new book—what is it about—and when it is out? Where can people purchase it?

My newest release, Copper Girl, hits the shelves on June 25, 2013. It takes place in a world that was once full of magic – that is, until the government outlawed it. This is a major problem for Sara Corbeau, descendant of one of the most powerful magical families still in existence. She’s a metal Elemental, marked as such by a copper raven emblazoned across her back. Sara spent her life hiding who and what she is, until one day when a man appears in her dreams, and then in her apartment. Sara learns that her dream man is Micah, an Elemental from the Otherworld. Suddenly, Sara can’t hide any longer.

Is there anything new, unusual, or interesting about your book? How is it different from other books on the same subject?

Copper Girl is an urban fantasy with a tinge of dystopia. My magic system is fairly unique; there are elements on old magic, such as satyrs and fauns, as well as a newer magic, manifested by Elementals. As the name suggests, Elementals derive their abilities from one of the five Elements: earth, air, fire, water, or metal. Sara and Micah are both metal Elementals, as is the Elemental ruler, the Iron Queen.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

For a long time, all I had was Sara and Micah’s story, which was nice, but not enough. The turning point came when I added Sara’s brother and father, both of whom had gone missing due to government actions.

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

The second chapter! Specifically, when Sara grabs Micah’s hair, exposes his pointy ears and exclaims, “You’re an elf!” The process of those two getting to know each other was great fun.

Tell us about your book’s cover – where did the design come from and what was the design process like?

My cover was designed by Lisa Amowitz, and I couldn’t be happier with it! I knew I wanted to feature Sara’s mark, so I sent Lisa a few rough ideas (when I say rough, I mean rough) and she ran with them. I can’t wait to see what she comes up with for the rest of the series.

Jennifer Allis Provost is a native New Englander who lives in a sprawling colonial along with her beautiful and precocious twins, a dog, a parrot (maroon bellied conure, to be exact), two cats, and a wonderful husband who never forgets to buy ice cream. As a child, she read anything and everything she could get her hands on, including a set of encyclopedias, but fantasy was always her favorite. She spends her days drinking vast amounts of coffee, arguing with her computer, and avoiding any and all domestic behavior.

Sara had always been careful.

She never spoke of magic, never associated with those suspected of handling magic, never thought of magic, and never, ever, let anyone see her mark. After all, the last thing she wanted was to end up missing, like her father and brother.

Then, a silver elf pushed his way into Sara's dream, and her life became anything but ordinary.

  1. It's always the elf, isn't it? Nice to meet you, Jennifer.

  2. Wouldn't metal be part of earth since that's where it comes from? I thought there were only 4 elements and then whatever the 5th one was in "The Fifth Element" which I've never been able to watch all the way through.

  3. This book just keeps sounding more amazing every time I read about it. Guess it's time to get my hands on it, hey?

  4. Lovely interview. I still say your cover is the best.
