This morning, I have a couple of quick questions for you:
1. Do you consider yourself an introvert or extrovert?
2. Do you like fast-paced stories with lots of action, slower stories that are less plot-driven, or a mixture of both?
I have a hypothesis about how these traits may be correlated, but I'd like to gather some data first before disclosing it.
I'm an introvert, without question. I like any pacing and style of story as long as it falls within the genres that I enjoy - fantasy, sci-fi, horror, thriller, action, history, historical fiction.

I'm with PK that it really depends what mood I'm in. It's like with movies where sometimes I turn on the Netflix and I want a comedy or sometimes an action movie or sometimes a serious drama. It all depends.

ReplyDeleteI don't like books that are TOO fast paced. The Dresden Files were too much for me.
I don't like books that are TOO slow either. The first Thomas Covenant book, for instance, was so slow to build to anything interesting that I just barely finished it and couldn't pick up another. The Magic of Recluse is another book that was boringly slow.
The thing is, those books aren't lacking in action and conflict. And Dresden is certainly not lacking in plot or characterization. So those really aren't the aspects that determine whether or not I'll enjoy a book.
I consider myself an introvert. Mostly because I can get along without human interaction for a few days.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy books that include a mixture of character development and action. My example is the short story "Bougainvilla" from the anthology "Zombies vs. Unicorns". I'm sorry, I forgot the author who wrote it. But there was quite a bit of build up towards a Big Thing that was backed up by the main character's characterization throughout the story. And then there was a final awesome ending.
I am an introvert, hands down. As for my reading choices, I'm not into action packed novels, preferring the slow, emotional build over guts and glory.
