Six Impossible Things

As I was reading Black Swan Rising last week, a book that includes both vampires and fairies, I thought about how the combination reminded me of the Stookie Stackhouse books. It seems like an odd combination, but both books come up with a different way to have the different supernaturals interact. Certainly, having more than one type of supernatural creature in a story presents possibilities for more conflict and different types of magic. But does it ask too much of the reader to throw several supernaturals from different myths into the same story? What factors make it work, and when doesn't it?

  1. I think, as with any good story, mutual conflict and goals can put the oddest of characters together for the common purpose. When dealing with paranormal characters, I would tend to think it's a bit safer bet to merge two or more creature's then say, a lion tamer with a chartered accountant. Yet, who knows, with the right hook and plot, anything could work!

  2. Nathalie, I think you make a good point about how mutual goals can bring two characters together. That said, now I'm trying to come up with ways how to combine a lion tamer with an accoutant. I bet the lion is easier than dealing with the tax code. ;)
