Indie Books

I thought I'd continue the discussion from yesterday by focusing on indie or self-published books. Have you read any self-published books? If yes, what did you think of their quality? If not, why not? What would entice you to read a self-published book?

For my part, yes, I've read self-published books. Just as with traditionally published books, they've varied in quality. I'd say more, but my son just woke up, so I'll turn it over to you for comments.

Yes, I've read self-published books and get quite a few review requests from self-published authors.

As for their quality, it depends. Most had great stories. There is only one that I couldn't finish so far. The majority could've used a bit more editing, but I wouldn't say it was distracting. There are some I absolutely loved and wondered why they didn't try traditional publishing. Others, I could read the first page and know why they would be rejected by traditional publishing or agents, not that the story was bad. No, most of the stories were good, but as I said, some needed more work.

For the most part, I try to judge the book on the book, no matter how it was published. There are some great books out there. You just have to know where to look. :)

I've been trying self-pubs that I'm unfamiliar with. I will read more of the work of some and others will hit the no list.
The biggest problem so far is editing and therefore, rewrites. You can see the potential but they put it out there to soon.

I've read two self-published books and loved them both. Plus they were cheaper than the traditionally published ones.

I just finished a self-pubbed thriller and thought it was excellent. That's not even a genre I would normally read either. And I'm in the middle of Amanda Hocking's Switched. She's not the most lyrical writer, but she's very adept at plot.
